Hello, my name is Missie.
I am a homeless Veteran and I live in Denver, Colorado. I would like to start a NON PROFT Organization that helps Veterans who hit hard times in Denver. My dream is to create an Organization that offers Free Coffees, Donuts, Baggies of Goodies (like soap, toiletries, detergent, snacks, shampoo, conditioner, shaving, deodorant, and other things to help. As the organization gets bigger we can offer more support and bigger help to all the Homeless Vets in Denver. If you are interested in helping please contact me here. CONTACT
I recently separated from my husband. I was a Stay At Home Mom in Colorado Springs for 4years. My son Finny is 3 and a half years old. He has recently been diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder. (ASD). This makes being a single mother very difficult. He is in the "undiagnosed phase" so we are waiting on an official diagnosis. In the meantime Daycares will only let him stay with them for 2 hours a day. After he gets his diagnosis I can put him in Special Needs Daycare and then I will be able to work Full Time. This period of waiting is very difficult for me.
I separated from my husband (long story) and then moved to Denver because my Dad lives here. He rescued us and got us away from my husband and his family. My husband essentially made us homeless and then he ran off and began truck driving for a living. Instead of helping us he shoved us into his Mom's House in Florida and expected us to live there rent free forever. I had the common sense to run away from all of this and got my Dad to get us out of there. This is how I ended up in Denver. I was a victim of Financial Abuse and my money was completely gone when we finally realized that the marriage was not working. Now I have to start over from scratch.
My Dad lives in a 55 + Community so we were only able to live there for one month. He told them that he would not kick us out. However since we got a "Child Disturbance" Letter I decided to go to the VA with my Dad. They invited us into the VA Homeless Housing Area and I got my first Case Worker there. She offered me to stay at the "Samaritan House" and I took the offer.
It was a good thing too because my three year old son was causing havoc in the hallways. The Condo started complaining everyday. We had a choice to make. The Condo said that I could stay but my son had to leave. I decided to not put my son up in Foster Care like the average mother in this situation. I packed my things and said "I am going with my son!" To where? A Family Homeless Shelter. However after a few weeks of setting up the room, (it has a key for the door) things got cozier and we started to settle in. It is not easy living here and it is not easy telling the world what happened to me because we are talking about my pride. However I do have a story to tell.
I am a Combat Veteran. I still am in the reserves. A lot of people say "aren't you in the military? Why can't you live in the barracks?" That is when you are Active Duty. I would volunteer for deployments but I am still working on getting a diagnosis for my son. This is the part that I did not plan on when I separated and moved to Denver. Most single moms tell me "put your son in Daycare. They will watch him from 7am to 6pm." I believed that it would be easy to go back to work. However the unforeseen troubles made this more challenging and now it is harder than before. After I got over the horror of living in a shelter (again we have our own room) it became very functional.
Every day I keep my appointments and I work hard on getting everything situated. I recently got a great job offer! So I am coordinating daycare, getting transition housing, and working on reliable transportation to get to work.
It turns out that we don't need much to be happy nowadays. These are my adventures on a day to day basis. I hope to start a NON PROFIT group that helps and supports Veterans in Denver who are going through hard times.
Please email me your stories if you are a Veteran who is also homeless or if you have experienced hard times in your past. Together we will laugh, cry, and laugh some more. Here are my adventures in Denver as a Homeless Veteran. NON PROFIT HELPERS? CONTACT ME
